Get to know Guimarães, the city known as the birthplace of Portugal. With a deep and rich history, this Portuguese city stood out during the foundation of Portugal and is tied with a mysticism that will take you back in time. We leave you with a little sneak peek of what you might find there!
Firstly built to serve as protection for a nearby Monastery, the birthplace of the first Portuguese king – D. Afonso Henriques -, is a mandatory stop in Guimarães. It played a huge part in the fight for the independence of Portugal and unfortunately suffered from a decayed state until the second half the twentieth century when it was restored to what it is today.
Paço dos Duques de Bragança
The Paço dos Duques de Bragança wasn’t always the museum it is today, it started as the house of D. Afonso, a bastard son of a Portuguese king. It was abandoned from the fifteenth the twentieth century when the restoration work transformed it into the museum of nowadays. Come and get to know this museum with the “Conquer Guimarães” Tuk Tuk tour.
Guimarães City Wall
The construction of the City Wall of Guimarães dates back to the thirteenth century during the reign of D. Afonso the third, and it was only concluded almost a century after. A big portion of the city wall was destroyed due to the consecutive growth and construction of other buildings and roads in Guimarães. However, you can still see a part of it and the “Guimarães Nature” Tuk Tuk tour takes you right to it.
I loved my tour with Marco! He was really friendly and this tour was the highlight of the trip. We got to see every nook and cranny of the city, would highly recommend!
Lisbon is one of most beautiful cities of Europe, I live in Lisbon for a while now, but only after this Tuk Tuk tour I have been able to access the most amazing hidden places of the city. You will never get there if you take a bus or tram.
