awning with the name of a tavern in lisbon

At a time when the so-called modern taverns and alternative restaurants are emerging, there are those who prefer a more traditional place, with a family atmosphere and typically home-cooked cuisine.

Papel towel, house wine, homemade snacks and handwritten menus. These are the characteristics of a typical Lisbon tavern.

Almost of all them work as restaurants, with lunch and dinner service, featuring a menu full of usual dishes of the day and meals served at the counter.

We made a selection of taverns that have resisted to changes and maintain their essence. For anyone looking for good food at affordable prices, they are definitely a good option.

This family restaurant is decorated with running tables, wooden benches, a snack back, a slate with the menu and ox horns on the wall, alluding to its name.

It is located in Mouraria and offers a wide range of meats, with the ribs being the main specialty. But it also serves fish dishes, accompanied by the traditional bean rice. In special times there is lamprey and cabidela.

Homemade soups, bitoques, spare ribs, whitefish, golden, croquettes, baits and cod crayfish. These are some of the delicacies you can try in this tavern located in Chiado.

We advise you to make a reservation, given the popularity of this place which, by itself, is relatively small. Prices are around 10 euros per person.

By the name you can already guess where this restaurant is, decorated with 11 photographs of the former player and selector Paulo Bento.

Here, there is pica-pau, snails, stewed gizzards and fried sausage. For dinner, the specialties are gizzard rice with prawns, fried mackerel with açorda, grilled cuttlefish, Portuguese stew and bitoque.

Tripe with white beans, as well as sausages are other specialties of this restaurant, which has a large terrace area.

Known as one of the most emblematic taverns in Mouraria, it is a great choice for those who want to pay little and have a nice lunch. Enjoy, because this space closes for dinner.

The spare ribs with bean rice, picanha, small cuttlefish, duck rice, little steaks with garlic and baked codfish make the delights of those who visit this establishment.

The space is small, but it does not lack the charm: tiles with history, drawings with more than 10 years and a closet where is stored the library of references to the tavern.

The hospitality of the owner is one of the peculiarities of this restaurant that serves cod with grain, or to the lagareiro, Portuguese stew, kid, and rabbit.
